Meet Jana Alayra

PCOM and Village Pres MOPS is excited to introduce our speaker for this week (October 13th)! You will not want to miss this special event featuring this mom with a heart for Mothers of Preschoolers:

Jana Alayra is an artist with whom many can identify. She is a wife, mother, and friend, busy with the daily routine of tending to the lives of her three young daughters and producer husband, Ron. In the midst of this ordinary life, Jana answers the call to a unique ministry of leading worship, both to adults and children. Whether leading a small group with her guitar, or singing for a thousand children and their families, Jana's enthusiasm and love for Christ are evident, sincere and inspiring. When people leave one of Jana's concerts or testimonials, they often say that not only were they entertained and encouraged, but they felt they made a new friend.

Jana is, as one emcee recently said during an introduction "as real as they get," sharing openly about the pain and sorrows in her life as well as Christ’s victory through it all. Her humor and hope are truly encouraging. Hers is a unique ministry of sorrow, celebration, and faith. To know her story and to watch her lead people in praise is a true testimony of God’s power and faithfulness.

Jana taught herself to play the guitar at the age of 10, and began leading worship shortly after becoming a Christian in high school through a youth group called Young Life. After college, she relocated to San Diego, CA, where she was asked to lead worship for a mega-college/career group. Working later as the children's director at a Christian conference center, Jana met a popular children's artist named Mary Rice Hopkins, and served as her musical partner for 10 years. Simultaneously, she began recording collections of her original adult praise music in 1989. Her projects today include: “Free Indeed” (1989), “Here in Your Hands” (1992) – both produced by Denny Bouchard; and “There Will Come A Day” (1995) – produced by John Andrew Schreiner. “No Place Like Home”, produced by Jana’s husband, Ron Alayra, has just been released (2001).

Jana has an inspiring and natural connection with children. In the past several years, Jana and her husband Ron, have recorded two collections of her original children’s praise music—“Jump into the Light (1995) and “Dig Down Deep” (1997). The songs on these two collections are being used in churches and groups all across the country and internationally. Currently Jana and Ron are recording their 3rd children’s CD that is due out late early Fall of 2002.
As catchy and refreshing as the CDs are, an important component to Jana's ministry is to see her interact with the children. After many requests, Ron and Jana created a live concert video featuring 14 songs from both “Jump into the Light” and “Dig Down Deep,” filmed at Saddleback Church in Mission Viejo, CA. Ron, Jana, and the band have been busy keeping up with requests from around the nation. In the Spring of 2003, Jana and the band will record their 2nd live in concert video that should be available in Summer of 2003.

Jana is a mother of four young children (one of whom died in a car accident in May of 1996). An instant connection is made with the young moms as she shares her sense of humor and her heart. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) groups nationwide have invited Jana to come and share her music and testimony. She was the worship leader for the MOPS, Int’l regional conferences, and their National Convention in 2000 & 2001. She is a frequent guest speaker/singer at women’s conferences, retreats, and banquets. Jana has also been a featured artist at several national conventions. Few walk away from her presentation without being deeply touched. Jana’s music can be heard on various Christian radio stations across the country and is now available in Christian bookstores as well. All facets of their ministry continue to grow and expand.

Jana, her husband Ron, and their three girls live in Irvine, California.

MOPS This Week!

To kick off a new year of Mothers of Preschoolers, we will have a special guest speaking on The Seasons of Friendship.

Debbie Wong is a speaker, singer, and author who inspires through spoken word and song. Her passion is to encourage women to dream again and discover their full potential in Christ. Wanting to encourage those who have become stuck in a Christian rut, she founded Heart’s Desire Ministries when she began living her own heart’s desire. Once afraid to take risks, she rose above her fear to start her ministry as well as her own computer consultant business. Debbie has been singing her whole life and is currently the worship leader for Pasadena’s First Church of the Nazarene’s women’s Bible Study. In the past, Debbie served as the worship director for Mariners Church’s Weekly Communion Service.

She will be speaking to us about friendship and how to explore our friendships at a new level by determining if we are in spring, summer, autumn or winter. Debbie’s metaphor using seasons will give us an awareness that can enhance a thriving friendship or save a struggling one.

Debbie is the mother of 3 children – Grace 10, Olivia 8 and Joey 5. She released a solo CD and is a published author. Her CD, as well as her books, will be available for purchase.

This week at MOPS {April 28th}

Dr. Eric Ball: Pediatrician at South Orange County Pediatric Associates

Dr. Ball has been married to his wife, Emily, since December of 2000. Together they have a toddler son, Ethan, who everyday teaches him more and more about pediatrics and childhood development, and baby Julia who was born in May of 2008. The oldest of three brothers, Dr. Ball knew he wanted to be a pediatrician since he was seven years old. He was raised in New Jersey and then moved to North Carolina for college and medical school. He met his wife, an Orange County native, in college and together they moved to northern California for his pediatric training at Stanford University. After a year as chief resident at Stanford in which he supervised the pediatric training of 60 physicians, he, Emily and Ethan moved back to Orange County to be closer to their family. The now live in Irvine, five minutes from Ethan’s maternal grandparents.

Dr. Ball enjoys all aspects of pediatric care, especially early infancy and the toddler years. “Pediatrics is unique in that most of your patients are healthy. The field is a wonderful blend of science, education and interpersonal relationships. The best parts of my day are sitting with new parents and helping to answer their questions, and guiding them through the difficult parenting process.”

When not working in Ladera Ranch, Dr. Ball enjoys spending time with his family. He is an avid SCUBA diver, a huge movie fan and a reasonably good cook. He has also recently taken up running, completing his first half marathon in January 2007.

Fill Your Home (and car!) with Praise

Some of my favorite Kids' Worship Music

Kids LOVE to hear other kids singing. And the songs you play now will plant a seed in their hearts. I grew up listening to Psalty the Singing Songbook. I love sharing these CDs with my kiddo. They are great stories told with singing. You can check them out here.

One of my contemporary faves is Seeds Family Worship. Here is a sample of one of their tunes:

Their songs and albums can be found on iTunes and amazon.com

Other popular local artists include Dean-o and the Dynamos and Jana Alayra, an amazing mom who has a heart for MOPS:) (You can hear some of their songs by clicking on their names.)

My son loves busting out his drums and other instruments to play along with one of the Hillsong Kids dvds.

For babies, check out Praise Baby...it's like Baby Einstein dvds set to praise music.

Please leave a comment if you have any recommendations for kids' praise or other music your whole family can all agree on!

dare to LIVE LIFE {fully} right where you are

During these past two years I have enjoyed the writing over at a holy experience. I even participated in her 1000 Gifts project....where bloggers, writers, readers, anyone really, kept a running list of all that God has blessed us with. The simple, everyday, beautiful things. Gratitude...consciously acknowledged, written down to give thanks to God. I will honestly say that I often get in the way of seeing the gifts in my life. But I have learned that {gratitude} is an important practice in becoming a disciple of Jesus- and living fully, right where you are. It will give you new eyes and change your heart.

So the writer of this beautiful blog now has a book: One Thousand Gifts: a dare to live life fully right where you are. If you are interested in intentionally {giving thanks} and starting your own list, take a look at it! If you are interested in reading this book in community, as part of a book club, check out the Bloom Book Club online, they will begin posting videos and online conversations on Feb. 6th. The author, Ann Voskamp, will be involved in the online discussions & video. You can read an excerpt of the book here.

I have participated in the Bloom Book Club in the past. It is great because you can fit it in whenever you find some down time to read and watch the videos online (in my world it was during my toddler's nap time or bedtime) in the comfort of your own home.

So please leave a comment if you are planning to read this book! I would love to know what you think.
